Arrival – Lima Airport

Lima Airport is quite modern when compared with Sao Paulo Airport, have no idea how it will handle the crowds and flights associated with the World Cup Later this year. Immigration, baggage and customs were all very efficient, was looking for a cab within about 40 mins after landing.

From the airport I went straight to the ship. Luckily my Cab Driver, Ivan, spoke English, he provided me with a running commentary on the sites. Driving in Lima is a bit like driving in Bangkok, very chaotic, thanks to Ivan I made it safe and sound to the port.

Truly Singaporean Makan Session – New Ubin Seafood

Truly Singaporean Makan Session – New Ubin Seafood

In my opinion, one of the best restaurants in Singapore is New Ubin Seafood. Great food, good prices (especially for Singapore) and no corkage (extremely good for Singapore). On 1 July 2015 New Ubin held the first of its new monthly series of set dinners where they will invite their favourite chefs to cook for those lucky enough to be on the mailing list.

For the first dinner they invited Jeremy Cheok from Slake to cook the Truly Singaporean Makan Session. Jeremy is not a trained chef, he is a scientist who is enthusiastic about playing with food (his own words).

Our table was for Singapore Brown Bag Drinking Club (Not my term), so the wine was, as usual excellent, and very diverse, maybe even more so than usual. There is only one, well maybe two, rules when it comes to Brown Bag, rule one make sure you bring a bottle a very good wine, the second rule is bring a back up, just in case the first is corked or we get thirsty, usually the latter.

SG50 National Day Parade Practice

SG50 National Day Parade Practice

On Saturday 20 June 2015 my quiet Saturday was disturbed by some strange noises from outside, it was Singapore Military and Civil Defence Force vehicles practising for the SG50 National Day Parade. The practice started at about 1pm and went through until around 10pm. Every Saturday from now until National Day on 09 Aug 2015 will be used to practice for the parade, including a fly past (next post will include photos of the fly past) and the fireworks display, which, unfortunately, I am not able to see from my balcony.

As this year is the 50th Anniversary of the Independence of Singapore, the National Day Celebrations and Parade will be even bigger than usual. The size of the parade and (probably) the fireworks will dwarf the previous years. This year the National Day Celebration will be held at the Padang with Nicholl Highway being used as the staging area for the vehicles that will showcase Singapore’s Military and Civil Defence capabilities. Nicholl Highway is the road directly below my balcony so I have a fantastic view of the staging area, these are some of the photos I took on 20 Jun 2015.

28th SEA Games Closing Ceremony Fireworks

28th SEA Games Closing Ceremony Fireworks

The 2015 SEA Games, or the 28th South East Asia Games, finished on 16 Jun 2015 with a fireworks display, unfortunately there was no wind again and my view of the fireworks was progressively blocked by the smoke from each of the previous sets of fireworks.

The SEA Games Flame

The reported cost of the 28th SEA Games was around SGD324 million. No idea if this event generated the same or more revenue or how many visitors came to Singapore to spectate. I guess one of the benefits of the games was that Singapore did get to show the place off!

There were around 4,800 athletes from 11 nations who competed in the 36 disciplines / sports. The 28th SEA Games was the first for Timor-Leste For more

28th SEA Games Opening Ceremony Fireworks

28th SEA Games Opening Ceremony Fireworks

The 28th South East Asian Games are currently in progress in Singapore. Luckily I have a balcony where it was possible to witness the Opening Ceremony Fireworks in comfort with a bottle of Sparkling Red, in this case a Magpie Estate “The Tight Cluster” .

Singapore does things a bit differently when it comes to practicing for a major event they also include the fireworks, making for a great opportunity to also practice my photography.

My apartment’s balcony has a great view of the National Stadium where the Opening Ceremony was held, including the reservoir where the fireworks were launched from, so it was photo time.
