ANZA Singapore BBQ March 2016

Wine Exchange Asia (WEA) regularly host for ANZA Singapore a barbeque and I was again lucky enough to be asked to help with the March 2016 edition. ANZA is a voluntary organization with an Australian / New Zealand focus that provides a variety of activities that enhance members time in Singapore.

These are small gatherings, up to 12 people, and are hosted by Bob from WEA at his Condo.

The wines presented on this night were what I would call quaffers, good for a BBQ or to enjoy when something special might be considered a bit over the top.

Below are my notes on the wines that were presented on the night.

From this batch my favourites are the:

  • 2013 Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run – Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2010 Charles Cimicky Saint C – Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

The Wine

1 Name: Majella Sparkling Shiraz
Vintage: 2009
Region: Coonawarra, South Australia, Australia
Varietal: Shiraz
Alcohol: 14.5%
Colour: Deep, dark ruby
Aroma: Plum, raspberry, spice, vanilla and oak
Palate: Full-bodied with an abundance of fruit and a trailing sweetness
Tannins: Fine
Finish: Medium - long

Comment: Nice wine, not as good as a couple of the earlier vintages, but still enjoyable. Needs to be served cold!
2 Name: Innocent Bystander
Vintage: 2015
Region: Yarra and King Valleys, Victoria, Australia
Varietal: Pinot Gris
Alcohol: 13%
Colour: Bright pale straw
Aroma: Pear and green apple aromas
Palate: Crisp and refreshing
Finish: Medium

Comment: A good wine for a warm afternoon. Not as austere as most Pinot Gris, almost could be considered a Pinot Grigio
3 Name: Innocent Bystander
Vintage: 2014
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia
Varietal: Chardonnay
Alcohol: 13%
Colour: Pale straw
Aroma: White peach, grapefruit, citrus and melon aromas
Palate: Crisp, opens up as it warms up.
Finish: Medium-long

Comment: Not a bad Yarra Valley Chardonnay. Needs to be served cool, not cold as that will constrain the palate and aromas. Good value for this quality.
4 Name: Charles Cimicky Saint C
Vintage: 2010
Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia
Varietal: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Shiraz
Alcohol: 14%
Colour: Deep purple
Aroma: Pleasant, smoky mix of blackberry, blackcurrant and spice aromas
Palate: Full-bodied jammy palate, good structure and balance
Tannin: Fine
Finish: Medium - long

Comment: A high quality wine considering the price. Has aged well, worth a look.
5 Name: Kilikanoon Killerman's Run
Vintage: 2013
Region: Clare Valley, South Australia, Australia
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Alcohol: 14%
Colour: Deep Garnet
Aroma: An enjoyable earthy mixture of blackcurrant, spice, oak and chocolate aromas
Palate: Medium / full - bodied with good texture and balance
Tannin: Savoury
Finish: Long

Comment: Enjoyable, great nose and palate. I liked the savoury tannins and palate. A good wine for a BBQ or as a quaffer.
6 Name: Chris Ringland 3 Rings
Vintage: 2012
Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia
Varietal: Shiraz
Alcohol: 13.5%
Colour: Deep garnet
Aroma: Interesting, smoky mix of plum, blackberry, spice, black pepper, mocha and vanilla aromas
Palate: Full-bodied, but not overbearing
Tannin: Savoury
Finish: Medium-long

Comment: Good value for the quality, would apeal more to an American palate than an Australian one as it is not a huge Barossa Shiraz, another good quaffing wine. Suggest decanting it and leaving for a while as it improved greatly in the glass.
7 Name: Kalleske Pirathon
Vintage: 2012
Region: Basossa Valley, South Australia, Australia
Varietal: Shiraz
Alcohol: 14.5%
Colour: Deep crimson
Aroma: Pleasing mix of blackberry, liquorice, dark chocolate, spice and vanilla aromas
Palate: Full-bodied, rich palate, with a lush mouth-feel
Tannin: Smooth
Finish: Long

Comment: Great wine, needs some more age, but drinking well now. Looking forward to trying this again in a few years.
